Joey was old. Think of the oldest thing you know of, and then
of its grandfather. Joey was older than that. His previous owner
(who loves them very much but had to give them up for housing reasons)
told us he was 13 when we got him. While I've never heard of a
14-year-old ferret, I think that age was probably about right.
Joey went blind at age 7, and got around pretty well until his last few months,
when he declined sharply. When he stopped eating altogether, we decided it was
his time to go, rather than watching him starve to death or putting him through
painful and confusing surgical procedures that wouldn't have bought much time anyway.
He left us in the beginning of April, 1999.
Joey's great loves were laps, plastic and paper bags, cardboard boxes, and piles of
laundry, as he thought they all made excellent sleeping spots. He was also highly fond of chewweasels.
While we miss him very much,
we hope he's happier where he is, somewhere where he's young and spry again, and can see again, and
do all the ferrety things he missed out on later in life.
